02 · Thermal Is a Measurement Workflow

A Bright Colour Is Not Automatically a Defect.

Thermal cameras display apparent surface-temperature patterns. Reliable decisions require the operator to understand the target, environment, camera settings and limits of the inspection method.

Interpret the pattern in context—not the palette by itself.

Two objects shown in different colours may have different temperatures, different surface properties, different viewing angles or different reflections. Document the conditions and verify important findings.

!

Thermal cameras do not see through walls, roofs, smoke or solid objects. They measure infrared energy from visible surfaces, and reflective materials can produce misleading apparent temperatures.

Target Size & Distance

The anomaly must cover enough detector pixels for the intended detection or measurement task.

Emissivity

Surface material and finish affect how strongly an object emits infrared energy.

Reflected Temperature

Shiny surfaces may reflect surrounding heat sources, sky or the operator environment.

Weather & Timing

Wind, rain, solar loading, cloud cover and time of day can change the thermal pattern.

Viewing Geometry

Angle, range, focus, motion and obstructions affect image quality and interpretation.

Validation

Critical findings should be checked using the appropriate qualified inspection method.

07 · Common Questions

Thermal Drone FAQ

Clear answers to common questions before selecting a thermal drone system.

Can a thermal drone see through walls or roofs?

No. A thermal camera measures infrared energy from the visible surface. It may reveal a surface-temperature pattern associated with conditions behind that surface, but it does not see through solid material.

What is radiometric thermal imaging?

Radiometric files retain temperature-related data for pixels, allowing compatible software to adjust palettes, measurement parameters and annotations after collection. Results still depend on the target, conditions, settings and inspection method.

Is 1280 × 1024 always native thermal resolution?

No. Zenmuse H30T provides 1280 × 1024 thermal imagery, while Matrice 4T uses a 640 × 512 detector and can produce 1280 × 1024 output through its super-resolution mode. Detector resolution and processed output should not be treated as identical.

Which thermal drone is best for routine inspections?

Matrice 4T is a strong portable starting point for many routine programs. H30T on Matrice 400 or Matrice 350 RTK is better suited when higher resolution, stronger stand-off performance or flagship payload flexibility is required.

Can thermal drones measure an exact temperature from any distance?

No. Measurement quality depends on target size in pixels, focus, distance, atmosphere, angle, emissivity, reflected temperature, gain mode and other settings. Detection and accurate measurement are different requirements.

What should I provide for a thermal-system quotation?

Share the assets or incidents involved, target size, expected temperatures, working distance, required output, operating environment, frequency, existing equipment and whether your team needs training or reporting support.
